The Three Pillars of AI ROI

Think of your AI's impact in three main buckets:

A Simple ROI Formula

The basic idea is: ROI = (Net Profit from AI / Cost of AI) * 100

But how do you get that "Net Profit from AI"?

Quantifying Revenue Gained

Quantifying Costs Avoided

  1. Identify Potential Losses: What costly problems could AI prevent? (e.g., equipment failure, fraudulent transactions, customer churn).
  2. Estimate Frequency & Cost: How often did these problems occur historically? What was the average cost per occurrence?
  3. Project Savings: (Estimated Frequency of Problem Average Cost per Problem) Reduction % due to AI = Costs Avoided.

Example: Your manufacturing plant had 5 costly equipment breakdowns last year, costing $50,000 each. You implement an AI predictive maintenance system. If it's expected to prevent 60% of breakdowns, that's $150,000 in costs avoided annually ($50,000 5 breakdowns 0.60).

Putting It All Together

Once you have these numbers, plug them into the formula. Remember to include the total cost of your AI – software licenses, training, implementation, and any ongoing management.
